Two reported dead as derailment halts US northeast train travel

Two people were reportedly killed in a train derailment near Philadelphia that forced a halt to rail services along a stretch of the northeast of the United States on Sunday. US railway service Amtrak said in a statement that the train, the Palmetto, was en route from New York to Savannah, Georgia, when it struck a backhoe on the tracks south of Philadelphia. “Northeast Corridor service between New York and Philadelphia is suspended,” read an Amtrak statement, which said some passengers were injured.

Educational divide in GOP White House race; what’s behind it

It was in Nevada, just about month ago, when Donald Trump proclaimed his affection for the uneducated. Trump overwhelmingly leads his rivals for support among the less educated, and draws more modest backing from college graduates and those with postgraduate study, according to exit polls conducted for the Associated Press and television networks by Edison Research. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz captured the next best showing among the two groups, with 27 and 28 percent, respectively.

Why Kids of Color Don’t Need ‘White Hero’ Teachers

“I always say the first step is an acknowledgment or a recognition of the fact that you are in the classroom as an expert in content—math, science, reading—but you lack the expertise in so many domains,” said Emdin, who is now an associate professor in the department of mathematics, science, and technology at Teachers College, Columbia University. The big picture, then, becomes a dismal paradox: As economists predict most well-paying jobs in the near future will require at least an associate’s degree or certificate, minority kids are at risk of being stuck in a cycle of poverty that only a quality education can break.

Debris in Mauritius to be examined by MH370 investigators

A piece of debris found on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius will be examined by investigators to see if it came from missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, Australian officials said Sunday. The discovery comes less than two weeks after officials confirmed that two pieces of debris found along the coast of Mozambique were almost certainly from the aircraft that vanished on March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. “The Malaysian Government is working with officials from Mauritius to seek to take custody of the debris and arrange for its examination,” Australian Transport Minister Darren Chester said in a statement.
