Five days after Donald Trump upset Hillary Clinton, some of those who live inside the Washington, D.C. Beltway and supported Clinton were still trying to figure out what happened, struggling with the results of the race for the White House that many never really imagined would happen.
“It’s not just Republican versus Democrat,” one person told me, “It’s that Donald Trump is a complete embarrassment.”
“Why were the polls so far off?” one neighborhood dad asked me as we watched our kids on Saturday, as he was still puzzled by the result.

As Election Day arrived this week, I found myself thinking back on all the travel, all the different events, and all the news that I was able to cover in 2016 – up close and personal – in the campaign that ended up electing Donald Trump as the next President of the United States.
People sometimes ask me to name the “best” moment on the campaign trail that I have covered – I don’t know that I have just one, but these were the some of the things that made me smile as I thought back on this campaign.

It was a day for the history books in Washington, D.C., as President-Elect Donald Trump flew here to begin the process of a transition by meeting with President Obama at the White House, later sitting down with Republican leaders in Congress who will have the responsibility of shepherding his agenda through the House and Senate.

The results of Tuesday’s election became clear at the White House today, as President-Elect Donald Trump arrived for his first meeting with President Obama, with the two men discussing the transition and important issues, as Mr. Trump vowed to seek the advice of the outgoing President.
“It was wide-ranging, we talked about some of the organizational issues in setting up a White House,” the President said in the Oval Office, as camera shutters clicked loudly in the background.

Donald Trump’s upset win over Hillary Clinton on Tuesday was fueled in part by a big surge in votes for the Republican in the Rust Belt, the Upper Midwest and Iowa, as Democrats were unable to motivate their supporters to turn out to vote in large enough numbers to offset Trump’s gains in more rural areas.
