PRESIDENT TRUMP ON HURRICANE IRMA: “WE’RE AS PREPARED AS YOU CAN BE”

  • 4:00 am Sunday, September 10th, 2017 by Jamie Dupree

After several days of prep, federal emergency officials on this Sunday must now wait to see just how much damage Hurricane Irma does to Florida, as for the second time in the last few weeks, a strong tropical system could set the stage for billions of dollars in federal disaster relief needs.

“My administration is monitoring Hurricane Irma around the clock,” the President said in a Saturday tweet. “We will do everything possible to help save lives and support those in need.”

“Hurricane Irma looks like it is going to be a really bad one,” Mr. Trump said at a meeting of [More]

25 YEARS LATER, SURVIVORS OF HURRICANE ANDREW GRAPPLE WITH VISIONS OF HURRICANE IRMA

It was just a few weeks ago that south Florida marked the 25th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, as the Miami area looked back at an event that brought dramatic change to the lives of many residents – now with Hurricane Irma approaching Florida, those who lived through Andrew are hoping they aren’t about to see a repeat of that destructive storm.

“Every August I think about those harrowing days in 1992,” said Robert Lenz, who now lives in Atlanta, but found himself scrambling in recent days to make sure his mother found a better place to stay, north of Miami.

WHITE HOUSE URGES AGAINST “HURRICANE AMNESIA” AS IRMA TAKES AIM AT FLORIDA

  • 2:44 pm Friday, September 8th, 2017 by Jamie Dupree

With Hurricane Irma seemingly headed for a landfall somewhere in south Florida this weekend, the White House on Friday expressed confidence in federal disaster preparedness for this second major hurricane to threaten the United States in recent weeks, but officials also warned those in the path of the storm not to underestimate the power of the tropical system that has left a path of destruction in the Caribbean.

“Let’s hope there’s no hurricane amnesia,” said White House Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert, as he urged Florida residents to follow evacuation orders from local officials.

  • 10:44 am Friday, September 8th, 2017 by Jamie Dupree

With lawmakers worried about another hurricane, the U.S. House on Friday morning sent President Donald Trump a $15.25 billion aid package to deal with damage from Hurricane Harvey, and to bolster federal emergency resources that may be needed in the days ahead for Florida and other states that could be hit this weekend by Hurricane Irma.

“We’re here today to tell those folks in Florida, those folks in Texas, that this Congress has your back,” said Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-TX), who described the devastation in his district, which includes the city of Corpus Christi.

“Please vote for this bill,” said Rep. [More]

As the Senate on Thursday easily approved $15.25 billion to bolster the federal disaster response to Hurricane Harvey, GOP lawmakers gritted their teeth over provisions added to the bill – with the blessing of President Donald Trump – which would extend the federal debt limit for three months, and provide for the funding of government operations until December 8.

“It’s unfortunate, they ought to be separate votes,” said Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), who predicted he would not be the only Texan on Friday to oppose the Harvey aid bill in the House, all because of the deal that President Trump struck [More]

WITH EYE ON IRMA, SENATE EASILY APPROVES $15 BILLION PACKAGE OF HARVEY RELIEF AID

  • 2:39 pm Thursday, September 7th, 2017 by Jamie Dupree

After almost doubling the size of an initial aid bill for victims of Hurricane Harvey, the Senate on Thursday moved with bipartisan speed to approve $15.25 billion in new disaster aid money, what may be only the first installment in what could be an expensive recovery tab for areas along the Texas Gulf Coast. The bill must go back to the House for final approval, before being sent to the President’s desk.

The Senate vote was 80-17. The original House bill had $7.85 billion to help with disaster efforts at FEMA and the Small Business Administration; the Senate bill [More]

SENATE MOVES TO ALMOST DOUBLE THE SIZE OF HURRICANE HARVEY EMERGENCY RELIEF BILL

  • 9:59 am Thursday, September 7th, 2017 by Jamie Dupree

With flood waters from Hurricane Harvey still receding along the Texas Gulf Coast, and Hurricane Irma now taking aim at Florida and the southeast coast, Senate Republicans are moving to add $7.4 billion in federal housing money to a nearly $8 billion package of federal disaster relief, to replenish accounts at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which lawmakers said would run out of money in coming days.

The extra housing money would make the total disaster aid package over $15 billion; the Governor of Texas has said his state needs over $100 billion in federal aid for Hurricane Harvey [More]

It landed with a thud. A few hours after House Speaker Paul Ryan had sternly rejected a plan from Democrats for a short term debt ceiling increase that would be tied to an initial Hurricane Harvey disaster relief bill, President Donald Trump was accepting that exact plan in an Oval Office meeting at the White House, a move that left GOP lawmakers stunned on Capitol Hill, with many wondering what might come next.

Mr. Trump also agreed to a temporary plan to fund the federal government, setting up a series of mid-December deadlines which may bring about giant political showdown [More]

“Our message today is that help is on the way,” said Rep. John Culberson (R-TX). “We are acting decisively – there are no Democrats, there are no Republicans.”

LOOKING BACK AT PRINCESS DIANA’S FUNERAL – 20 YEARS LATER

  • 2:00 am Wednesday, September 6th, 2017 by Jamie Dupree

Twenty years later, it still seems hard to believe that I was in London to cover the funeral of Princess Diana. And thinking back about those days after her death, I am still struck by one thing in the streets of London – the silence. Walking alongside Diana’s funeral procession, through the crowds that gathered outside of Buckingham Palace, in the throngs that ringed Westminster Abbey, the silence was broken mainly only in one way – by the sound of people crying, overcome with the emotion of the moment.

“All along the funeral route, there was silence, even though [More]
