Rumours that a new long-range stealth bomber, the Xian H-20, would soon be joining China ’s air force have been swirling in defence circles since the early 2010s.

And now, observers say the Xian H-20 could make its first public appearance at this year’s Zhuhai Airshow in November, as long as the Covid-19 pandemic remains contained.

The Xi’an Aviation Industrial Corporation went so far as to release a promotional video in May 2018 that parodied Northrop Grumman’s own Superbowl ad for the B-21 Raider. The H-20 is rumoured to be similar in size and general layout to the B-21, but there are no confirmed images of the nuclear-capable aircraft.

The H-20 reportedly has four non-afterburning WS-10A Taihang turbofan engines sunk into the top of the wing surface with inlets that are in an S-shaped saw-toothed configuration to minimise radar visibility.

The aircraft was originally set to enter service last year, but there have been significant teething problems with the WS-10A power plant.

With an operational rage of 12,000 m (about 7500 miles) the Xian H-20 could potentially change the balance of military power in the Pacific theatre.

The H-20, the B-21 and Russia’s Tupolev PAK DA are all broadly similar next-gen stealth bombers. The Chinese and American aircraft are both scheduled to take to the skies in 2025, with the Russian bomber expected two years later.

Meanwhile, Australia has débuted its Loyal Wingman force-multiplying drone – an advanced AI airframe with modular multi-role capabilities.

The South China Morning Post quotes a Chinese government source as saying: “The Zhuhai Airshow is expected to become a platform to promote China’s image and its success in pandemic control – telling the outside world that the contagion did not have any big impacts on Chinese defence industry enterprises.”

Concerns have been raised, however, whether the debut of a potent offensive weapon like the H-20 will send the wrong signals and increase international tensions.

“The Beijing leadership is still carefully considering whether its commission will affect regional balance, especially as regional tensions have been escalating over the Covid-19 pandemic,” another source told the paper.

“Like intercontinental ballistic missiles, all strategic bombers can be used for delivering nuclear weapons … if China claimed it had pursued a national defence policy which is purely defensive in nature, why would it need such an offensive weapon?”

Scientists have identified the highest levels of microplastics ever recorded on the seafloor.

The contamination was found in sediments pulled from the bottom of the Mediterranean, near Italy.

The analysis, led by the University of Manchester, found up to 1.9 million plastic pieces per square metre.

These items likely included fibres from clothing and other synthetic textiles, and tiny fragments from larger objects that had broken down over time.

The researchers’ investigations lead them to believe that microplastics (smaller than 1mm) are being concentrated in specific locations on the ocean floor by powerful bottom currents.

“These currents build what are called drift deposits; think of underwater sand dunes,” explained Dr Ian Kane, who fronted the international team.

“They can be tens of kilometres long and hundreds of metres high. They are among the largest sediment accumulations on Earth. They’re made predominantly of very fine silt, so it’s intuitive to expect microplastics will be found within them,” he told BBC News.

It’s been calculated that something in the order of four to 12 million tonnes of plastic waste enter the oceans every year, mostly through rivers.

Media headlines have focussed on the great aggregations of debris that float in gyres or wash up with the tides on coastlines.
